Advice & Guidance

We run social and community support projects, and provide activities that:

  • Work towards the reduction of racial discrimination, and its related hate crime and negative myths

  • Promote equal opportunities, and the development of good relationships between different racial groups and communities.

  • Provide help in the form of negotiation, information, advice and assistance to individuals or groups prevented from obtaining help or services elsewhere due to racial or other forms of discrimination

  • Provide information and basic level advice to all residents of the London borough of Barking and Dagenham on Welfare benefits and Equality laws.

Working with others

We work in partnership with other community groups, charities, public bodies and organisations.

To achieve our aims and support our work in the local community we are always looking at new ways to work in partnership, and to develop collaborative projects and initiatives.

BDREC is working on a Community against Hate Crime (CAHC) project, funded by MOPAC, to support victims of hate crime with 4 other boroughs in North East London. The aim of the project is to provide Advice and Advocacy Service to support victims of hate crime, establish a Community Witness and Support Team (CWST) and to support victims in their homes and neighbourhood. The project also aims to bring victims /survivors together by setting up hate crime victims mutual support groups.

We are ambitious for the future. Our objectives for the next three years include:

  • Producing new packs and resources e.g. displays exhibitions on migration, aspects of racism etc., and encourage and assist community activists to gain confidence and skills to become speakers with other groups than their own in schools, broader venues and events.

  • Identifying the less engaged community groups within our catchment area, and work with them to - pinpoint common issues of concern - help mitigate or resolve those concerns by linking them (if appropriate) to relevant groups and community led activities - represent their views to statutory and larger, more mainstream voluntary organisation

  • Providing advice, information and training on discrimination law and hate crime, equal opportunities and the promotion of good race relations/community cohesion

  • Providing free advocacy, advice & assistance to those who believe they have experienced racial harassment & bullying
